Gavalochori
Gavalochori vacation village in north west of Crete
Gavalochori is a village situated in the Apokoronas area and not far from the sea side resort of Almirida.
The region of Apokoronas, is about 25km east of Chania main city, in NW of Crete. The area is known equally for its pretty and plenty traditional villages and landscapes. The Apokoronas extends from the foothills of the White Mountains north to the coast, in a wide plain with rolling hills. To the east, Cape Drapanon rises above the plain and extends out into the Sea of Crete. The area is very green and fertile, unusual for rocky Crete.
"Kiliaris" river, runs through the region all the year and some smaller rivers run only on the winter time. It is suggested that the name "Apokoronas" came from the ancient city of Ippokoronion.
